The first Bachman (or King) I read. It was recommended to me by a fan, who knew very well I'm not into the fantasy genre, but can't get enough of the noir. He (my husband) guessed right, because once I got hooked to the story of the unfortunate Clayton Blaisdell, Jr, I couldn't stop reading. Even though a lot is told through flashbacks the pace is quick and soon after the introduction my main concern was with Blaze, who's heartbreaking story made me wish finally something good would happen in his sad life. Thrilling till the end, where Bachman got me to the point where I could almost hear the sounds he describes. The end would be the one thing I would like to change in this book. Not so much what happened as how it happened. Without giving away too much I doubt that the law enforcement that was involved would actually do what they did.

The least interested I have been in a King book in a while. Every time I put it down I considered not picking it up again. Just not all that engaging.
This was written in the same time span as The Bachman Books, and I can see a similarity in style/feel. I enjoyed this book a lot. I will admit to crying briefly, but not for our "hero", though I did feel for him, cared for him -- and to some extent cared for him.
It is just barely a horror type story, after all it is a King book, so it does have some Horror -- but not the supernatural, scare your out of your socks type. This is the How can we treat someone like that type of horror. The my baby was kidnapped type of horror.
In any case, a very enjoyable read.

Not his best story, but as always, great story telling. More sad than scary. 3.5 stars.
