Very early into reading this book I found myself not wanting to do anything but keep reading to see how the story unfolded. I was hooked. What a treat it is ro read a book that makes you feel singularly focused on the story.

The writing and progression of the story is excellent..The number of people in the book was just right and each developed in a balanced way. I appreciate the struggle of the lead character, Hazel, and how on the outside she seems to be maneuvering through life just fine but on the inside is stuck. That is familiar to me.
The acceleration to the end was also excellent. I could not put the book down.

This is my favorite read so far for 2024.

The book was okay, but it dragged in the middle. How many times did we have to listen to Hazel say “did you know about Whisperwood?” “did YOU know about Whisperwood?”

Also the author leaned way too much on the whole “repressed memory” thing. A kindergarten-aged child completely forgets her entire life and family, and lives an idyllic life with zero memory or other signs of trauma (other than some nightmares)? But then it all comes crashing back in 10 seconds because someone says “you’re my sister? Nope. I couldn’t buy it.

This was chosen for “If all Arkansans Read the Same Book” for 2024. I enjoyed the story and the author kept the mystery going. I learned a little about operation pied piper but not a lot. Now I want to read more of children separated from their parents in the war.
