This is a cool read. Especially the first 60%. It has a nice message that works as a nice through line, but it becomes overbearing after the central conflict concludes and the narrative starts vocalizing the things that most readers will already have taken away from the text.
I do believe that I'll be reading more Laurel Hightower! Her writing is entertaining and goes down smooth. This book was very short, but I read it in 2 sittings which is rare for me no matter the length.
Read this in October if you just want something generally spooky.

There was a point about two thirds into the book where I thought the author was going for a certain big twist, and I was relieved to see she did not do what I feared she would. As it is, this story doesn't really rely on a twist ending, instead focusing on isolation, relentless threats, and character focus.
I will say that the threats seemed a bit episodic, once the horror really got going. Short on explanations or consistent logic, this story leans into fabulism or the absurd, but what I found offputting about that others will find appealing. Most importantly, it kept me going and I tore through it on a train ride home.

This book just got crazier and crazier at every turn. I absolutely ADORED it and could not stop telling my friends to read it
I honestly don't know what to feel about this read but ultimately can leave no more than two stars. It felt like what I read was only the first third of a novel. The sudden abrupt ending left me feeling entirely disappointed, frustrated, and cheated because I was so invested in the story by then. What I did read was a phenomenal build-up that was fast-paced and packed with creepy and suspenseful scenes and interactions. But in the end, there was no explanation for anything and it was all just left ambiguous.

This was actually a 4.5 star read. Creepy, gory, with a good dose of badass heroine at the end. I really enjoyed Addy’s journey, even if I’m not 100% sure of what happened here with some plot points. Still a fun ride, and I always love a good reference to the Tennessee Vols :)
4.5 stars, only because the parallel to female disempowerment is so real and depressing. The visuals and storytelling are great. And I liked her decision at the end, although I wish we had some idea that she was better prepared. Perhaps that is part of the author's intent. I don't hate that, I just feel for Addy is all.
