In this second addition to the Valkyrie series, life for Bryn has become one big disaster after another: her crush Aiden is alone in Hel, holding on by a thread after being poisoned by Loki; her foster brother Brody has gone missing from Valhalla; and if that wasn't enough, the warriors of Odin are being killed by an unknown black substance. It's Bryn's mission to right each of these wrongs, and to save those who are dependent on her success. She just doesn't know if she's up to these trying tasks before her. But one thing is for sure; she won't give up until she succeeds, or she's dead.

A traitor lies among the ranks of Odin, and that person might just be closer to Bryn than she thinks. In T.G. Ayer's "Dead Embers," we are witness to Bryn's struggles and her triumphs as she faces enemies seen and unseen. Read as she faces her destiny head-on, with a courage that could inspire anyone.

This story starts off right where Dead Radiance ends, so make sure you have read that book first.

I am loving this series, and I am surprised to say that I enjoyed this book even more than I enjoyed the first. Being thrust back into the story so quickly was great, and this is one of those series that I want to marathon read. There is so much going on! I don't want to say anything about the amazing story, SO FREAKING AMAZING, so I'm just going to tell you that you should read it.

Dead Radiance (the prequel to this book) captured me with its evocative setting and a new fresh way of looking at Norse mythology.
Dead Embers picks up where the first book left off. Although this is Book 2 of a trilogy it can be read as a standalone as Bryn's backstory is carefully and subtly woven into this current storyline.
Bryn's trials and tribulations in this book 2 test her in ways she could never imagine.
Bryn is that rare character in YA fantasy - a kick-ass heroine with flaws who refuses to whine about how her life is turning out.
TG Ayer has captured my curiosity and stirred my imagination even further in this second book. Her prose is rich with emotion and she spins settings so real from a web of beautifully woven words that cannot fail to mesmerize the reader.
I cannot wait for Book 3.

The second book picks up soon after where the first book ended. Bryn is now a Valkyrie in training. Without her best friend by her side, Bryn has a hard time – doubting herself and second guessing her decisions. But time isn’t on her side either. She has to save Aiden and find out who is poisoning people soon as without new warriors, they have little hope of winning the looming war.

The character of Bryn is in a spiral mode in the instalment. On one hand she is second guessing all her decisions and on the other hand she doesn’t know whom to trust. But I loved her spunk. She moves ahead with her training, her agenda of saving Aiden from hell and find the culprit behind all the poisoning. Even in this second book, her character keeps growing and I loved that fact.

Once again, the best part of the plot was the mythology. I loved the Viking mythology. A lot of different gods and creatures are introduced to the readers in this book. Even Thor makes an appearance. It was interesting to not only learn about the Gods & creatures but also their powers.

The author’s style of writing remained consistent with the first book. She did put in a couple of amazing twists that I absolutely loved reading about. But, is it funny that every time I read the name Loki, I get a mental picture of Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth popped in when Thor made an appearance?

The book ended with a HUGE cliffhanger and I cannot wait to get my hands on the third part!

Poor Bryn! It seems like nothing is going her way. One thing leads to another and the Warriors of Asgard find themselves dwindling in numbers.

I know I've said this before, but I absolutely love Bryn. She's ferocious, and protects those who are weak. She doesn't always think about the repercussions of her actions, but she has proved to be a valuable asset to Odin. Speaking of Odin, he appears to always take on a fatherly role with Bryn. I wonder if he feels he has to considering the circumstances, or if he really wants to. Thor makes an appearance!!!! Anytime he was mentioned, an image of Chris Hemsworth flashed through my mind.

The storyline is picks up right where Dead Radiance left off. There's danger lurking around every corner. There are a few startling revelations, and betrayals here and there. I was a bit saddened that we didn't has as much Fen time. But I believe that was to help Bryn grow and learn to trust her instincts.

I loved this book, and felt absolutely awful for Bryn endures at the end.

Yeah, reading this book so close to Dead Radiance, well, made everything all the more better! And that ending got me again! Now to read Dead Chaos again, before heading into Dead Wrath for the first time! Yeah!

*First read December 6th 2012*
Really, really great book, and what an ending! I want Dead Chaos now!!!

Dead Radiance was one of my favorite books a few years ago when it first came out and since then I have been so excited to continue the series. Dead Embers picks up right where Dead Radiance leaves off. Since the first three books are all out now, I would recommend reading series one right after another because TG Ayer has a super talent for crazy cliffhangers that leave you wishing for the next book to be in your hands ASAP. (Just a warning) This is going to be a really hard review for me to write without spoilers, because there are lots of the story that are based on twists and turns and crazy surprises. I will leave it at this- I am obsessed with Ayer's plot writing abilities. I love how she tells a story. She incorporated all sorts of Norse gods and creatures and really lets them shine in the story. And through all of their parts we learn all about Morse mythology, but none of it feels like an information dump. It just feels like we are immersed in Norse mythology and culture and I loved that.

Bryn really starts to grow and come into her own in this book. She still struggles with feeling different than the other Valkyries. She is more human in a way than them and it shows. She is a little too trusting and more open than the others, but I don't think those things are necessarily faults. I thought they were endearing qualities. And I loved the flying lesson scene with Fen. It was exciting and funny as heck! And this book would not be complete without Bryn's signature snark that I adore. She is a tad stubborn and hard headed but she loyal to a fault. I just really like Bryn. And in Dead Embers she has so much resting on her shoulders. She has a war to prepare for, and she has to go to Hel to rescue Aiden- her budding romantic interest from the first book, and to make everything even more interesting all of the Valkyrie warriors are coming back to Asgard with this mysterious black tar/goo substance that is bad news bears for them. Holy cow, there is a lot going on in this book! I ate it all up! I was just as engaged in this book as I was in the first. And you better believe I will be reading Dead Chaos right after this one! I need to know how what is going to happen next!

A bunch of the characters from the first book are back in the fray, including Bryn's human friend Brody. Plus some more Norse gods show up to make things interesting, like Thor. I will admit that I just saw the second Thor movie two weeks ago so I kept picturing Chris Hemsworth as this Thor. ;) (I'm sure everyone else did as well.) TG Ayer has done a fantastic job detailing the Norse gods and telling a riveting story. War is brewing and I just know that the next book will be EPIC!

To be honest, I didnt like this book as much. It took longer for the story to get off the ground, There were parts that were described too much in depth with out reveling anything of interest. While it was still a really good book, it lacked in other places too much. The author keeps talking about Bryn and Aidan's relationship, but we still dont know anything about it, or if what they feel is even love, or just raging teenage hormones. We dont know really where either stands, it would have been nice to see more of that, maybe the next book? There was roughly eight chapters that didn't need to be there. She could have compiled those in half, rather than drag them out the way they were. It wasnt at all a bad book, it was just a slower book.

Earlier this summer, I read Dead Radiance, the first book in the Valkyrie series and loved it. So I was very excited to get to read Dead Embers! This book did not disappoint! While I liked it a tiny bit less (but not much, I really had a hard time deciding whether to give this book a 4.5 or a 4) than Dead Radiance, I thought this book was a great follow up to the first book.

Again, one of the things that I loved about this book is the mythology. It's just so cool. I don't know much at all about Viking mythology but this sort of gives you a crash course and it definitely made me want to learn more about this world. A lot of different gods and creatures make an appearance in the book. This book does a good job of showing what all of the different gods and creatures can do instead of making the book feel like a sort of primer on Viking mythology, which I appreciated. It certainly made the book a lot more interesting!

Bryn, the main character, is pretty awesome in this book. She finally has a good understanding about what's going on and who she is and who she was. She's diving in to become a full fledged warrior or rather a Valkyrie. A lot of the story is about her training.

I actually liked the second part of the book a little better. It was a little more interesting to see how some of the scenarios from the first book were sorted out and in some cases, not so sorted out. I did wish more of this had come towards the middle of the book rather than the end.

As with the first book, this book ends with a major cliffhanger and again, I'm sort of devastated that I have to wait awhile for the next book. Life is not fair.
