I appreciated this on a technical level, but there is so little happening (in terms of plot) from page to page and it’s just not what I’m looking for in the contemporary books I read. I love this level of detail in science fiction or fantasy or speculative novels, but I don’t think it’s necessary here.

It definitely made the English Literature major part of my brain light up again though. I was thinking about essay topics as I read (the amount of character analysis alone…)

although this took me almost a month to read (damn you terrible attention span!), i absolutely loved this book! I spent so much of the story not knowing which character to trust and trying to work out if Bunny was truly the ‘bad guy’ or maybe just someone who was scared of his friends and what they were capable of? The descriptions and writing in this book is absolutely beautiful and i highly recommend it!

Donna Tartt's writing is soon lyrical and for a lack of a better word perfect. She makes you feel what she imagined through the most graphic imagery.
And of course the book gives major dark academia vibes, as it's a comment on elitism and classism and how far from reality these people are.
BUT the second half of the book took forever to finish because there isn't any real plot, like the first half also has some "just vibes" passages but there it serves to introduce the reader into the lives of the characters. But in the second half it's basically a lot of drinking and drugs and of course this has a deeper meaning but that didn't make it any easier to read.
And all the name dropping of grand philosophers and poets and what not, which I get again serves the point of showing the elitism, but was nontheless annoying because it just made me feel dumb for looking every other word up. This also extends to the general language, but I think mostly non-native speakers (C1) like myself would struggle with that.

i have been implored for years by my friends to read this book, and i knew why only a few pages. donna tartt's writing style is magnetic - the way that she tells the narrative draws you in, just as richard is drawn into the cult-like friend group (classics students are exactly like that). there are times when the text is indistinguishable between narrative and poetry, and is all the more beautiful for it. i see now why this book is such a legend, has a comfortable, gilded seat on so many essential reading lists, and is endlessly described as having a cult following. creepy, enthralling, intimate, poisonous, life-changing. go read it.

The OG dark academia book: basically Pretty Little Liars meets Rope but for nerds who like Dante 2🏺

Really disappointed this book didn’t live up to the hype: pacing was way too slow - like just get to the murder already.

Tbh PLL did it better and the play/Hitchcock film Rope is a way better version of this story in terms of suspense, pacing and exploring themes of ethics, academia, eruditeness, class and queerness.

NB the audiobook I listed to narrated by the author herself gave the most annoying voice to Bunny: he sounded like that little bitch in the Polar Express and so I wasn’t even sad when he was killed.

Also I found the main 6 characters so detestable I was indifferent to their
murders and suffering from trying to evade their crimes.
