herzliche empfehlung!

I honestly couldn't put this book down. I was so disappointed that the second and third installment in the series haven't been published yet! This book is an excellent example of fabulous execution of a book that keeps you following the mystery without being annoying or playing the pronoun game. Everything about this world that Fforde has masterfully crafted and is so specific that it creates a rich environment for character interaction and plot development. It is the perfect balance of silly, snarky, and dark. But I think the winning feature of this book is the protagonist, Eddie Russett. He is seemingly a simple man that wants what everyone wants out of life: to be liked and useful, but out of his plain-ness develops a personality that ultimately makes him important and enthralling.

It took me a while to get into the story but once I did the scope of the book is amazing. It is so visually awesome that you forget you are actually reading.

A dystopian farce--witty and funny with plenty of dark undertones. Post-apocalyptica of manners? Fforde has made that a genre. Similar in feel to his Thursday Next series but written with a more experienced, original voice. Unique, smart and entertaining with a great cast of characters.

2021 Reread (-listen): Still holding strong on my amusement by and appreciation for this book.

Not sure what I just read but I sure enjoyed it.

Very interesting. Again, took me a while to get a grip on the style of this book, but it intrigued me once I did. I would very much like the sequel to come out.

I like Fforde, but this book is not for more.

The idea is interesting, and the idea of a hierachy based on color percepation is rather anaglous to several things. Yet, the characters feel like blanks. Perhaps this is intentional in a book about color, but it doesn't work for me.

If you really like Fforde, read this. If you have never read Fforde before, don't start with this one. It's his weakest book by far, and he is a very good and creative author.
