This book had everything I normally like - family drama, a restaurant setting, current events - but I struggled to get through this book and admittedly scanned through the last quarter of it. Some have loved it but not me :/
This was good. I enjoyed the second half of the book immensely more than the first. There are so many characters. I really wish there was a family tree for easy reference. It is a SSSSLLLLOOOWW build. The beginning of the book takes a while.

The beginning was meh… thought it would be a 3 star book, like a bit hard to get through but there are good points, no. Felt like I was reading the author’s political agenda mixed with Instagram comments about diversity, racism, etc. Rylee is what, addicted to going to parties? Towards the end I could just flip through multiple pages without missing anything. Terrible

If you love books about food and family, this novel is a warm hug and a belly laugh. The Sullivans have been running their family restaurant in Chicago for three generations. But when the founder, Bud Sullivan drops dead only weeks before the Cubs win the World Series and Trump is elected president, the Sullivans find themselves adrift in the world and their lives. The book mostly follows the two grown Sullivan sisters, Jane and Gretchen, and their cousin Teddy, as they navigate failed dreams, failed marriages and trying to keep the restaurant afloat. But the book also has plenty of humor to balance out all this angst. It was weird to read about the country’s reaction to Trump’s 2016 election, like it’s a historical event (which I guess it is now) but the author captures the mood of the country at that time very well, particularly how tense everyone was for months. I liked how everyone found their footing in some unexpected ways at the end, and the writing is sharp and wonderful.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did.
It explored family dynamics in a tumultuous time, but I didn't connect with any of the characters or have any attachments to the outcome of their situation.
It was as if I was witnessing some other families mundane life where no one really does anything noteworthy. Yawn.
