This was a delightful read. I so enjoyed this narrative about a messy family, restaurant drama (fans of "The Bear" on Hulu will enjoy this) and a reflection on life during the 2016 election.
My feelings for the book are mixed. The writing was great and descriptive, but the characters were a perfect example of passive and miserable people not really doing anything during the 300 pages the were given.
Very fun book about a close-knit Chicago family who owns an old-fashioned restaurant in a Chicago suburb.
When I audibly laugh many times throughout the book, and cry because of the exquisitely written familial relationships I know it’s a 5 star read.
Fun read. Love that the author captured the ecstasy and agony of the Cubs and Trump. It was such a crazy time.
I totally loved this, it hit me at just the right time of life
I love myself a dysfunctional family story and this was such a fun audiobook! It was a nice change of pace to enjoy a character driven novel vs. the plot heavy reads I tend to go for. I just finished watching “The Bear” and loved that this was centered around a family owned Chicago restaurant. I saw someone compare this to “This Is Us” meets “The Bear” and couldn’t agree more. I thought the writing was great and the characters were all relatable in their own ways.
The characters are fairly dislikable and somewhat whiny and I was not interested enough in them to want to continue reading more.
3.5 rounded down. Family story - interesting characters but not overly memorable.
This was the first book I read in 2022 and it was just the thing to bring in the new year - engaging, not too serious but also not too light, characters I was rooting for but also didn't mind when they were brought down a notch. I did feel a little like I was being lectured to a couple of times in regards to the #MeToo movement. Also I could hardly feel sorry for any of the kids since they had one safety net after another.
This reminded me a bit of The Most Fun We Ever Had.
