This book took me a while to get through, and I think it is because it just never seemed to get going. Each of the characters seems incredibly passive in their own lives, which I know is how life works but made for a slow read. The book itself is wonderfully written, I just didn’t get the “laugh out loud” humor others found, despite being from a large, catholic, midwestern family myself.

Really liked it, wanted to keep picking it up. Laughed out loud a few times- fun characters and story lineand fast paced. Liked the restaurant setting- something different. Enjoy her writing style

I really enjoyed this book, admittedly in part because of how it reminded me of my family. My lifelong Cubs fan grandpa died just 2 months before the Cubs won the series, I went to college in Chicagoland, and the 2016 election (not unique here!) Really altered my family dynamic. Ive also worked in the restaurant business. This book felt extremely real and relatable in that sense. I found many of the characters not super "likeable," yet I was still rooting for them and empathized with why they were making the choices they were. I found the book genuinely humorous and laughed out loud reading. The shifts in POV also worked really well. Overall, a great intergenerational family story.
Yes there is a lot of political messaging in this book. I actually didn’t mind that part. But the book is extremely slow moving and some of the flashbacks to the Cubs game are not necessary. This is a book that does resemble real life. Unfortunately it’s a little too boring for a book. On the plus side, there were some funny parts and that’s what I liked most about the book.

An enjoyable story and some social commentary. Sometimes hard to follow the timeline. It was about life. I didn't know where the story was going or what the ending would be and that's perfect because that's life.
A little corny but a heartwarming story of a real family with real problems. If you like family drama and a good New England backdrop, this one is for you.
