Short, Audible Originals are often fun and entertaining. This was about 2 hours, so more like a novella. It was interesting although I wasn't at all invested in it. I could see this as being a longer, more fleshed out novel but it was a clever shortie.

2.75. I might have rated this higher in a longer format, but as a novella, I needed more character development in the culprit to find the motivation convincing.

I am super picky about short stories but as a dog lover and having been a dog walker for years I had to check this one out!

Perfect audio book.

I was pleasantly surprised with this novel! I listened to Sleeping Dogs Lie during a long commute and was completely immersed for the entire two hours. I would highly recommend listening to this during a long car ride an if you enjoy a twisty domestic thriller.

Sleeping Dogs Lie: A Novella by Samantha Downing (Audible Original)

After having surgery last week on the 9th that was a bit more in depth than originally intended, I sort of lost my mojo for reading…I figured a short Audible Original might nudge me in the right direction. Being just over two hours long and filling me with questions about every little detail of this book, I was hooked fairly quickly. I will say the narrators weren’t the best, in my opinion, and yet they still give the novella a gritty edge like an old murder mystery movie—which is the vibe of this book. I give it a rating of 3⭐️, which in my rating systems means it was a just an okay story but it was an interesting story and an easy listen...just not a very memorable. Reminder, this is just my opinion and I try very hard not to dislike any book.

Shelby works as a dog walker in Northern California, and she’s just finished her biweekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner—Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company—dead on the bathroom floor. As a detective interviews Shelby, a medical examiner inspects the body, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you lo believe.

Told between perspectives of Shelby, the dog walker, and Carla, the detective who is investigating the homicide of Todd…the story starts just as the description says but then there is quite the twist about 65% in. It’s a good, eye brow raising twist that made me even more interested and the element of questioning every character’s motives in all aspects. The funniest thing about this short book is how it is centered around dog walkers and dog lovers. If you love dogs and a mystery, I definitely recommend this book! I won’t give anything away but this one is a definite story about animal activism.

I hope to get back on the reading track now after this quick listen! Any suggestions for books that are quick or good for getting out a slump?

I liked the detective twist, but the rest felt sorta dumb. Maybe I'm just not enough of a dog lover.

Good quick read! Loved that Pluto was a main character too. I thought that the story was well written and the reader is diverted between multiple theories, leaving the ending suprising enough , but not overly complex which could leave plot holes,

I liked that the author gave a powerful notion to Det Grady, which translated well through the writing, and the eccentric neighbour was a dose of interest, but the rest of the characters were dull. It is hard to pack character development into such a short time, but I think if the unfotunate characters who met misfortune were more than 'the victim' I may have been more invested.
