I listened to this audiobook for a book club and I was really unsure of my feelings. I'm glad I stuck with it because it was phenomenal! Trejo's upbringing was rough. He was surrounded by drugs, alcohol, and violence from a very young age. His stories were raw and it was hard for me to listen at times about his addiction and survival in prison. After prison he still dealt with some very difficult family and health problems. Throughout the book, I kept thinking, "HOW IS HE ALIVE?!".

Something that really stood out to me was his faith and relationship with God. While I'm not the biggest fan of religion in books, his faith was beautiful. He took his survival of everything as a sign from God to help others and he has kept that force in his heart his entire life. I have so much respect for this guy and thankful he has shared his story with us! What a tough fucking dude!

About as fun and optimistic as a book that's half about drug addiction, gangs, and prison can be.  Overall, this was a great read, uplifting and inspiring.  There's a warmth through it that really sells it, leaving you invested in the author's story.  I also was really impressed with how self-aware he became, identifying the forces and biases that damaged his relationships and life in the past for what they are.  It's not often that you see men admitting that they didn't really see women as people, and that was why they acted the way they did, but Danny does.  It's hard for men of his generation to trace those lines and put in the work to change, and I thought it was really admirable that he did and made it such a recurring point in his book.  He's also honest that it's a work in progress, but I think that's all anyone can ask.
