Douglass is one of the most talented writers I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I think taking this in in an academic setting diminished some of my stronger feelings about reading it, but my class also helped me really notice the intricacies of Douglass's language. I definitely want to come back to this at a later date, hopefully alongside another of his biographies for comparison!

I read it in high school in class and it changed me. A very important book of our history and of black voices. Powerful and amazing. Want to read it again.

READ THIS BOOK.
Obviously an absolutely heartbreaking story but written so excellently I couldn’t put it down. Reading his story from his perspective is just something else. It says so much and makes such an impact in so few pages. I genuinely believe everyone should read this book. It should be in every secondary school reading list/syllabus.
