It’s only February, but I think I just read one of my favourite books of the year.

This fantastic debut novel by Charlie Adhara is everything you could wish for in a PNR and more. The Wolf at the Door seamlessly blends the paranormal into a straight up mystery/suspense and makes it supremely entertaining. The plot moves along slowly at first as it gathers all the elements of the intricate plot, then gaining speed as it heads into a fantastic and nail-biting climax.

In this world, werewolves are a known quantity within the government only. In order to protect this secret, the Bureau of Special Investigations is created to control the flow of information and to investigate any human/werewolf interactions that involve grievous injury or death. On the werewolf side there is The Trust, a group established by werewolves to look out for the best interests of the werewolf community.

Tensions between the two agencies have been escalating. The Trust is accusing the BSI of lackluster investigations, poor conduct and unnecessary force when bringing in suspects. The BSI claims they are overburdened and that assistance within the werewolf community is practically non-existent. When it is decided that one agent from each group will team up to investigate several murders and disappearances in rural Maine, it’s up to Cooper Dayton and Oliver Park to overcome their mutual mistrust in one another and bring a killer, or killers, to justice.

The Wolf at the Door brilliantly draws parallels between the treatment of wolves in this society and real life political and social justice events, and it manages to do so without pointing fingers at any one person or political party. I thought it was a neatly and smartly executed theme throughout the book.

I loved how the initial wariness between Cooper and Oliver, evolves into a true partnership. They both work hard at trusting one another, even though letting go of preconceived notions is a struggle. Thankfully, the chemistry between the two of them sizzles, with body language saying everything neither of them wants to verbalize.

I think the beauty of this novel is that it won’t only appeal to fans of PNR. Anyone who loves a good mystery/suspense will find themselves being drawn into the story. This book is part of a series, so there are some unresolved plot lines yet to be resolved, including Cooper and Oliver’s relationship which is left at a tentative HFN. I can’t wait to see what happens when all the threads come together in

All in all, I sincerely hope the next book is as good as at the first, as I can easily see this becoming a new favourite series of mine.

I received an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review.

My partner says you can't take your eyes off a shift even if your life depended on it, and I already look at you way too much.

I had a lot of fun reading this! Cooper and Oliver are terribly endearing. I would've preferred a slow burn but I think the pace they go at fits their characters well so I can't actually complain.

If you liked the Mercy Thompson series but wished it was gay, this is for you.

Y'all I don't fuck with omegaverse and I didn't even finish the first book of Twilight, but somehow I'm obsessed with this werewolf romance series?

I think it helps that this book is pretty much "werewolf romance for people who don't like werewolf romance" - it feels very grounded in reality despite the fact that, you know, some of the characters happen to be werewolves. It's essentially a police procedural romance, and
no one even turns into a werewolf until like 90% in
. No vampires, no supernatural elements, nothing like that. Just a man and his cat and his wolf...

P.S. I love that the werewolves in this book find the "alpha" terminology cringe lol. Really appreciate that because I also find it cringe and cannot take anyone seriously when they call themselves an "alpha."

4.5 stars, this was so so so so good holy shit. As expected of another one of Ergi's magical recommendations <3 I went in with no real expectations (i'm a fool) and I fell so fast for this book. Supernatural, romance and a good mystery, with great characters and an intriguing lore? This is heaven.

Cooper Dayton works for the BSI, a secretive FBI branch that investigates... special cases. After werewolves revealed themselves to the US government, the BSI was formed to monitor werewolf-related cases. The unit is new and chaotic, and after a run-in with a werewolf that left him scarred, Dayton is transferred to this new job. However, when tensions between wolves and humans rise, a new initiative is launched to reconcile both parties: partnering up a BSI agent with a werefolf representative. That's how Cooper is led to cooperate with Agent Park to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of multiple men in a small city in Maine. The future of this new system relies on how well Dayton and Park collaborate on this case, but it certainly didn't take into account for... everything.

I immediately liked Cooper. There is something about his grumpiness and inner voice that I found really relatable, and he is so damn funny. He is thrown into a complicated situation and my guy is just trying his best. Which is tough when your partner, someone you've been taught to be wary of, turns out to be super fucking hot. And competent. And genuinely nice. And funny. And so damn hot. Park is so damn cool, he has this very calm facade and is very skilled at his job. Their banter and the development of their relationship, from wary and begrudging attraction to more, was so satisfying, and never felt like it was going too fast. I just loved this so damn much.

The core of the story is the mystery - who killed these men? The narration gives enough clues to the reader for us to form theories, and enough red herrings to be entertaining and surprising. The truth does not come out of nowhere, the built-up set up all the elements for the reveal to make sense and still be a surprise. Everything ties back in a very nice finale that sheds light on more secrets and lies and I can't wait to read the next books to learn more about the lore, the mysteries and my boys! Again - I'm so in love with Dayton and Park's relationship, I think I have found a new addiction in my addiction, an inception of addiction because shit can never be too toxic, right?

I've read a bunch of romances that had mystery elements in them that ended up being wholly unsatisfying, as the mystery took the backseat to the romance and the reader was given nothing and was expected to just accept a reveal pulled out of someone's ass and that makes me so angry. This is probably the first real mystery story I've read in a while and it reminded me how fucking much I love them.

Thank you to Ergi who I owe my life (again) for recommending me only the best of the best.
