Recommended by the sense of place podcast because of multiple narrators. Some of them not animate.  I liked that part but the whole thing left me with a sense of impending doom. I’d rather read facts or something thrilling or lighthearted especially on audio- and it was making me avoid listening.  I

I am conflicted at how to speak about this book.  It presents itself as a story about grief after a man is killed in a lightening strike and what happens to his family in the years to come.

But it isn’t just a story about that. It paints grief as non-linear and that even when there is joy, it can be tinged with all the things our bodies hold within our DNA. This is a story about the mountain and living in a harsh, unforgiving environment. It’s about the bears and the witches and even the water sprites that manage to weave themselves in everyday life.

It’s about forgiveness.

It took me a while to get into, but I found the last chapter the most compelling.  It’s gorgeous writing, but not really for me.
