I loved this book. I think that the authors had a direct line to my type of guy. Like... down to the details. It's a little weird. It did make me fall for him quite quickly, though.
I will say, I got a bit frustrated with the fact that they were imperfect humans, but I suppose I can't begrudge them that, too much. Everybody has insecurities, everybody makes mistakes. Whether or not I can suffer through reading about those mistakes is a different matter. I clearly did okay with this one.
It's not the most astoundingly amazing piece of literature you've ever read, but it is moving, sweet, fun, endearing, and easy to read. All in all, quite a fun ride.

Renovating a beach house on a beautiful island while also falling in love sounds like exactly the storyline I need in my life right now. I love both of these authors and love that they wrote a series together, but I can also tell that this book is one of their earlier works. I still enjoyed it, but some of the tropes were a little heavy-handed. Read when you want to escape to a small town on an island for the summer.

I had a goofy fun time with this book. The side characters really carried a lot of the humour and played their parts well. The communication wasn't communicating between Lo and Jake, and Lo is quite possibly the most talented, accident prone FMC I've read in a while—she always manages to trip and fall when a certain grump appears to catch her— but the letters are cute and the banter fun.
I did go off on my own imagined tangent to make Jake suffer a smidge longer but, hey, Lo confesses early on that she's a super forgiving gal so it's within her character. 😆
Everything is a little ridiculous but that's what makes this a good little light-hearted closed-door romantic comedy.

Grumpy x Sunshine, Romcom, small town, neighbors, age gap
MMC: Jake Fieldstone; 32
FMC: Eloise ‘Lo’ Markham; 21
It was a chill, lighthearted read. Just Romcom vibes and fun, I really enjoyed it. She had just graduated from college and found out her estranged ish grandmother died and long story short she left her and her 2 sisters her home and money to renovate the place and turn it to a bed and breakfast so now she stuck there which is perfect for her cause her graduate school plans didn’t work out and she has no plans yet. Now she living on the Island, in the guesthouse where are neighbor he her grandmothers grumpy lawyer who seems to have been very close to her. There are now feelings being fought because of the age gap and past trauma not knowing if she’s going to stay and the whole town playing matchmakers and he has a feeling grandma Gennie may have been up to something even from the grave.
The groveling in the end with the letters was so cute 🥹and I loved how everything worked out.
“Hey, Frank,” Harriett says, too loud to be anything but intentional. “Did you say hello to Jake? He’s here for a business meeting”—she emphasizes this part with air quotes—“ with Genevieve Markham’s youngest granddaughter.”
““Just a little ambiance. For your business,” she says. I am never going to speak to anyone on this entire stupid island again.”
This letter 🥹 ”Dear Lo, I watched a movie last night that made me think of you. The next morning, I went on a run, and the sun rising over the ocean made me think of you. That afternoon, I met with a client who wore a pineapple pin on his lapel. Of course, I thought of you. I sense a pattern developing. Luckily, I really like thinking of you, so I can’t say I mind that I see you everywhere, in everything. Love, Jake”

This was cute & fluffy with a little bit of tears thrown in. I’m not in a good headspace right now & this is just what the doctor ordered. It might be why I cried too much at the third act breakup.
Both characters were fleshed out & had decent arcs. To be honest, I didn’t see how these two could sustain a relationship considering how different their life circumstances were. But, these women brought it home. It got me in all the feminist feels.
My mind is all over the place at the moment, so let me wrap this up by saying I highly recommend this book. It’s great. Super heavy on the kissing (no follow through.) And, if you like epistolary novels, you’ll love the third act.
