A fae centered Arthurian tale unlike any I’ve read so far. The author did a great job at descriptive world building, with scenes easily playing out in my minds eye. There was plenty of action, suspense, and even a touch of horror. An enemies to lovers, slow burn romance, a quest, with plot twist and turns aplenty. There was a love triangle, which I’m not usually a fan of but, it played out well in this story line. The FMC, Morgan Pendragon, was so blatantly naïve, yet I typically expect as much in a ‘book one’ of a series, especially one that features a fairly sheltered princess. I was happy to read that in spite of this, she still showed a strong sense of morals, fire, and spine. Now our MMC? Kairos Draven, aka Void’s Edge. Oh, how I’m a sucker for a smoking’ hot grumpy warrior alpha with a witty mouth, and a strong sense of “touch her and die” attitude, so you know who held all my cards. That ending? Just made me swoon all the harder. Now add a battlecat that rivals the size of a horse…and well Ms. Briar Boleyn you have well and truly stolen my heart. I’m excited to see where the story goes from here, and follow along to see more of the characters growth. I went into this story fairly blind, and I think I enjoyed it all the more because of it.

I finished this book in a whopping two days, which could have honestly been one. Once the story got going, it had me in an absolute chokehold and, it was difficult to put down. I only wish I would have started it sooner. Definitely won’t make that mistake with the rest of this series.

Special Thanks to @netgalley @saltwaterpress and @briarboleyn for the e-copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Did I stay up until 2am to finish this book? I most certainly did.

Queen of Roses is the first book in the Blood of Fae series. This book follows Morgan as she journeys across the country to find the fae sword, Excalibur, for her brother Arthur. While traveling, she learns more about the secrets of fae culture while being left with more questions about herself and her brooding mysterious bodyguard.

This dark fantasy is inspired by King Arthur's story and keeps you on the edge of your seat! This book is action packed, full of twists, and has a slowwwwwww burn romance. It ends with QUITE the cliffhanger.

You might like this book if...
+ You like the new adult fantasy genre, but want something different than the typical romantasy plot
+ You like plot lines, character arcs, and slowwwww burn romances that span over multiple books
+ You enjoy strong female main characters
+ You like twists and turns that keep you guessing

Please keep in mind that Queen of Roses has some themes that might be triggering for some readers; content warnings can be found in the back of the book.

Genre: Fantasy, Romance
Tropes: Found Family, Enemies to Friends, Baddie FMC, Diet Spice
Star: 5/5, I cannot wait to read book two

ALRIGHT! We have another Arthurian retelling BUT we get this one from Morgaine, Morgan La Fey aka Morgan's perspective. Boleyn leans hard into the half fae myth and thus starts a journey for her to overcome her evil, homophobic, sociopathic brother, Arthur (yea he's trash AF in this book).
Morgan was the stereotypical heroine:
Young-Check
Beautiful-Check
Innocent-Check
Stubborn even though she has no clue what she is doing-Double Check

Did I like her? No. Did I care about her trials? Also, no. I found her dumb AF and caught myself being REALLY annoyed with a fictional character and hoping for her to get maimed or something.
Now, did I keep reading? Yes. Did I finish this book in 3 days? Also, yes.
Big question: Am I going to continue this series? Yes I need to know what happened to Lancelet (stan) This sucked me in like Fourth Wing did.

This didn't break the mold, BUT I enjoyed the retelling from Morgana's POV. Thank you NetGalley & Starwater Press for the ARC.
adventurous medium-paced

Thank you so much to Starwater Press, Briar Boleyn and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.

Thank you Netgalley and Briar Boleyn for the ARC!

A twisted King Arthur’s retailing, starts off incredibly slow. There is some action in the end. multiple animal deaths, wish I had read trigger warnings somewhere. If you like a less spicy FBAA you will like this

The fantasy setting was fun. I understand this is a retelling, but changing the names might have made it more effective, as the story seems disconnected from the original legend. The modern values in the narrative don’t quite evoke the feeling of being transported to a different time. I’m tired of historical fiction just being used as set dressing. Perhaps categorizing it as a separate genre, like “wishful history,” could help distinguish it from traditional historical novels. It would be helpful for people who like historical accuracy in their books. It was overly descriptive, and the dialogue was clunky and repetitive. The ending interested me in the next book, but I couldn’t get into it until I threw the myth out of my mind.

Thank you, @victoryeditingngc, for providing the book through @netgalley.

This was a good read. As with some fantasy books, the world building and introduction of characters makes up the first half of the book. Boleyn does a great job with building a fantasy world with likable characters who grow during the book. The story is well thought out and leaves you wanting to dive into the second book.

Thanks to NetGalley for the e-book in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed Book 1 of this series. In the middle of the book where they’re deep in the journey I was beginning to think it was dragging a little but realized it was needed to develop areas they were traveling through and the history/creatures that are known in each place. I went from being sad for Morgan, to be excited for her, (even though I didn’t want her heart to go where it went) to being mad for Morgan. Can’t wait to see what book 2 holds in store!
