This one just did not vibe with me. The beginning felt slow and dragged out. I didn’t feel the chemistry between the two main characters at all. The second half of the book the pace picked up as they set out on their quest but it was still uneven in places. I think what upset me the most is that for a woman who has been raised to learn to fight like a knight, she has no survival instincts whatsoever. Also in the second act, a whole new character is introduced who joins them on their journey and his outcome was so predictable.

Pacing was off for me personally. The first half of book was so slow and you are just waiting for something to happen. And the things that are happening are all minor things that don’t really have anything to do with the main plot. The first half of the book is setting up the story, but I feel like some people and points were not needed. I feel like it detracted from the story instead of adding it. Pages and pages of descriptions led the book to slowly truck along, which left me skim reading and uninterested. It also left me confused by the pages and pages of descriptions instead of being able to visualize setting I was left overwhelmed.

The female main character was not what I expected her to be. She is a princess who wears pants and trains with the knights, so I am expecting this badass female character. Instead, she is a female character who has her own thoughts/ideas but rarely shares them. She lets innocents get executed and rarely speaks up or intervenes. She lets fear rule her life. Just not what I expected when I read that she was training with knights and was a decent sparring partner.

The last 20% of novel it redeemed itself with quick paced action. There was more story and plot unfolding, along with more secrets.

However, it did happen too late in the book in my opinion.

Overall, it was a decent book I liked the idea of Camelot with a bad king arthur, a female merlin, and fae. I just wish the book was paced a little better to keep the reader interested in the story.

First of all, I have to thank the author and NetGalley for providing me with the ARC. Still, this review is strictly my own thoughts and impressions.

So, I got into this book now knowing what to expect. I am an avid romantasy reader, so the theme seemed right to me. And boy, it did :)

I've recently read a lot of the genre, but this was one of the books that got me hooked from the prologue. I like that it has some darker topics, it's not your YA romantasy. It does have some tropes, yes, but it still tells such a compelling story.

You can tell this isn't the author's first book, rather her first one in the romantasy world.

The one thing I didn't care for, and it is just my personal preference, is
Spoilerthe sort of romantic triangle that was forming. Still, it didn't go too far with the trope and I'm eternally grateful for it :)

Anyway, WOW :) I'm off to book number 2!
