Devastating portrait. While the book is a classic the lens of the author is refreshingly modern, he writes as an advocate for the protagonist as she is wronged by her own family, love and society. Wonderfully written female characters for the time its set in.

What a bizarre experience!!! Just when Tess can’t get it any worse, she does. A story about the injustice women experience. But just too long. It felt like 3 different stories in one. What a rollercoaster. I wouldn’t recommend it, but I also don’t regret reading it.

  • Despised this book—absolutely abhorrent.
  • Literally every bad thing that could happen, did. I find it absolutely unbelievable.
    • Pregnant by rape, abandoned by husband because her thought her unpure, reconnects with rapist, husband comes back after years, she murders the rapist, and then she gets hanged. WTAF
  • The writing was beautiful in some places; however, it was MOSTLY arduous to read. Likely because it was originally a serial.
