Equal parts immersive, thought provoking, and infuriating. Wonderfully written! Can't wait to read more from this author!

honestly, my expectations for this weren’t particularly high given how much i hated sayaka murata’s other book, earthlings - but i’m still disappointed

the themes in convenience store woman were very similar to those in earthlings, and i found the language just as repetitive and cliche. society as a machine, people as cogs, being a ‘normal person’ - the message was drilled into the reader constantly, and to say that the writing lacked subtlety is an understatement

i think it’s safe to say that murata’s writing just isn’t for me. while i can appreciate what she’s trying to accomplish, i just can’t get past the constant repetition and, in my opinion, shallowness of the writing
