I rarely want to quote books in conversation, so when I find myself referring to lines from any given book it feels significant and I’ve written out more than one passage from this book because I refer to them so often.

I am not enjoying this book enough to continue reading it and to carry it into the new year.

To be honest, I have yet to find an agnostic that
(a) recognizes the multitude of Christian, not o mention religious traditions,
(b) claims that religion embraces a hard, cold, and solid uncertainty
(c) lays claim to mystery as the domain of the uncertain, while claiming that certainty will cancel all mystery
(d) does not remain ambivalent with regard to religion as a whole.

But maybe agnostics might find it profitable to read more, nay, to believe more than what they claim to believe. And that is something one cannot force out of anybody.

A call to appreciate mystery in a world demanding certainty from every angle. A beautiful, humble, powerful book.

While not necessarily mind blowing, Hazelton has some good points on the rigidity of belief vs the struggles pf persistent faith. Her blending of science, philosophy and personal reflection makes this both a digestable and thoughtful read

It gives a good look at religion, through the lens of language, and philosophy, all while confronting the sobering realization that we will all die someday.
