I first read this as a teenager and have reread it again 25 years later. It hasn't aged well but the original concept is sound.
'Sundiver' was an interesting book. The descriptions were very vivid and the plot was quite intense. Some of the 'Science' in the book took me a bit longer to make sense of, but I was able to follow along. The protagonist, Jacob Demwa, was a fascinating character study. He's a scientist and an explorer, but he's also a man with a troubled past dealing with mental health issues of his own. The resolution of this, with the assistance of an extra-terrestrial friend was quite touching and almost as momentous the resolution of the major story arc itself. Also, some of the many classical literary references were not lost on (and much appreciated) by me. References to Greek mythology, Shakespeare, Mark Twain, and Dickens were scattered throughout the narrative like a coating of sprinkles on a fictional donut (read the book and you'll get the donut reference).
I'm looking forward to the next book.

Not bad, but it just didn't pull me in enough to read any of the others in the series.
