A bit more on the tell than show side but I liked it. The adventure was easy to follow and enjoyable. The story was a wonderful read. The world building was impressive and the characters felt real and relatable.

this book was dense, as in a lot happened in a short number of pages and that made it read slowly despite being short. this was especially unfortunate because i took a break from reading in the middle of it. ironically, some of the themes and characters didn't get fleshed out as much as i would've liked. that being said, i did enjoy it. i love mythology-inspired fantasy so it was fun.
A promising premise, however I found most of the characters to be one dimensional. I also found it difficult, with few exceptions to remember the names of the characters. A disappointin read. Unfortunately, by the end I no longer really cared what happened to the characters.
Not a fan of first-person present tense. Might just skip this one, but will try Okungbowa's other works.

I enjoyed that this was based somewhere that I'm not used to (ie. not in a Western setting, not a middle-ages fantasy or "generic off-world" sci-fi), and that there was a slightly different perspective given than normal. A relatively easy read after you've figured out a few of the regional words/phrases (like the Ghana Must Go bag) so it's easier to paint a picture of what's going on in your head.
Without spoiling it, I'd be interested in where this story could continue. The story-world has so much more to explore due to the events in the book and I'd love to read more of it.

I had a great time reading this. I really enjoyed world building, characters, and Suyi's voice. The battles really made me want to keep reading. I'm thankful for stories like these
