As a reader that loves time travel stories I can honestly say that I freaking loved this book. It was sweet and romantic but sad as well.

I love me a time travel romance, and this was a pretty decent read. However, this is a stand alone novel so the pace moves pretty quick with the declarations of love, and romance, and what not.
Also I will say this was a very....sugar coated view of what would happen if a woman from the 20th century fell into 1800's England. Meet a friendly prostitute that is willing to put you up and pay for you for weeks after finding you on the street no questions asked? Ah yes let me introduce you to Lily
Want to get invited into a noble's home by faking a robbery and have them put you up, feed, and dress you when you have a flimsy story, no background, and just look pretty in a nice dress? Meet the Evergreens
Want to marry into a Duke's family and be accepted into English society as an American with no social status of your own or dowery, and not cause an uproar? Meet the Blackwells
So yeah, it was fun- but turn your brain off (even for a time travel romp) kind of fun.

DNF at 25%.
Emma was so unlikable and very Mary Sue-ish. The sentence structure in this novel is so clunky and awkward. I don't mind a hard to like hero or heroine but the plot has to make reading their journey worthwhile. I felt like this book, for something that is supposed to be historical, was barely if at all researched. Some things, since the heroine is supposed to be modern, can be excused but even the historical characters speech patterns seem weird for the time. Readability, for the modern audience is a factor in books like these, but I've read books where this is handled skillfully. Not so much here. I only got to where Emma and Lily's bizarre and thinly planned scheme takes place before dnf-ing. There were many eye rolls before that.
I just really need a historical time travel romance recommendation that isn't Outlander and that is well written.

There were a few elements that made this story just OK for me. First, there wasn't enough of the culture clash that I enjoy in time-travel stories. Second, there wasn't enough of a difference between the modern heroine's speech patterns and the other characters. The Victorian people all sounded like they were from the 21st century. I'm not a stickler for historical accuracy; if the author had even made up some Victorian words to show a difference, that would have been fine with me.
Despite those minor annoyances, I felt compelled to keep reading. I liked the friendship between the heroine and the prostitute who saved her. Also, this story did have one of my favorite things in a time-travel story, which was the heroine using her 21st-century knowledge to improve lives and endear herself to the Victorian characters. Because of this, I would be willing to try the author's next novel.
