So freaking good. Beautiful stories that make me want to live in a world where everything is narrated by Noyes.

A stunning collection of stories. I really appreciated and got into Noyes' darkness, the desperation and perplexity her characters felt throughout. These stories did what the best short stories do - leave you breathless and feeling a bit unsure at the end, shaken and unable to stop thinking about the tiny, intricate world you were just in the moment before. This particular volume also highlights a lot of Maine that doesn't normally get written about - not the idyllic coastal summertime paradise that is all some know of it, but the night, the winter, the murky, menacing quarries and empty roads and falling-down homes and falling-down lives. It was a surprising relief to see it told so starkly and un-romantically.

No rating for this book because I don't know how. I was immediately drawn into the first story, so I bought the book. Noyes writes well, but these stories are dark, too dark for me right now.

You know what is really hard and terrible? Being a woman. Also apparently living in Maine.

I wanted to love this, but I just like it as a friend. The author grew up in Maine, was taught by some of my favorite authors, and sets her stories in areas that are almost uncomfortably familiar. They have tension and resolution like other stories I love. But. I never connected with the book; it always felt like I was reading from a distance, or through a filter. They are well-written, well-paced stories, but lacked the emotional string I want in my books.

This collection of short stories set in New England proves that author Anna Noyes writes beautifully. Find out what else I think of this book in my review here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2016/08/02/maine-women-stories/
