I couldn’t finish this book. It didn’t get my attention at all. I got just over halfway through it before I gave up.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Somehow I knew too much and not enough about the characters in this book. Half the time I was trying to figure out which character was being discussed and then eventually realized that it didn’t seem to have a plot.

This was a beautiful, tough read. It is so messed up, but wonderfully written with call-backs and allusions littered throughout the book that one read-through is a disservice to the novel.

Roy uses the cultural history of India to create a book that could not have been written anywhere else in the world. We are dealing with the caste system, British colonialism, religion, history, culture -- the list goes on and on. Nothing about this book is easy to confront, but it is all important to understand.

Arundhati Roy is a fantastic author, and I hope that she decides to write again. But if she does not, I will cherish The God of Small Things as one of the best pieces of literature that I have read.

It's not badly written, but not to my taste at all.

I tried and tried to read this book....I just couldn't remain interested. The writing was very unique and the story had the potential to be very intriguing but I just couldn't remain focused on it. I had heard and read great reviews but this book just wasn't for me.
