I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! I do not normally go for horror, suspense, or gore, but the synopsis intrigued me. It was not as scary or tense as I expected, which was good. It was definitely a manageable level of tense-ness, and only got really suspenseful towards the end. It was written really well and kept me really intrigued throughout the books. I was pleasantly surprised by this book.

This is the easiest five stars I have ever given to a book. The plot was amazing and included so many twists and turns I just did not see coming and the characters were incredible, especially Simon’s character was so complex and intricate. It’s also worth noting that though this book is set in the 80s, the setting is weaved so expertly into the story that the time period is not at the forefront of the story (unlike many other stories set then).  100% recommend this book to anyone who likes crime and serial killers, but also for fans of Karen M. McManus’s One of Us Is Lying, Silence of the Lambs, Mindhunter, the Sinner and any other book/movie/show in that same realm.

This book was really tense and gripping, I couldn’t put it down. The characters were also really interesting and I loved the scenes between Emma and Simon.

Also the last 100 pages were so intense and there were so many reveals that genuinely shocked me! I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!

If you’re a fan of thrillers and true crime, I’d definitely recommend this.

Might bump the rating up or down with more time. I think the real target market for this book enjoys reading/listening/learning about serial killers much more than I do. The 1982 setting allowed me to accept the premise of the Killer Interview program and the participation of 18 year-olds in it a little more, and truly what shone for me was Emma and Mr. Bell.

ALSO, I don't read a lot of thrillers and YA thrillers especially are typically not my jam but this had a LOT of tension. I actually had to put it down for two days about 50 pages from the end because I was so afraid or what could happen on the next page.
