3 stars. I loved the first half of this book because it was fun and sexy. I really disliked the second half of the book because it included a trope I detest- the anxiety of post-intimacy due to misunderstanding and lack of communication. And it has a really corny ending, the kind that’s sappy and rushed. But I can see how people may like the second half. The tension was high indeed, but I lost interest. Narration by Julia Whelan though was great as always.

There’s a lot wrapped into this EH novel. Love and heartbreak. Known and unknown. Everything in January’s world is turned upside down but she wants to be the romantic and believe it’s all going to be okay. And as she and her sexy neighbor explore the realm of together but separate, January learns there’s some give around the term “happily ever after”.

"I don't need snowflakes. As long as there's January."
As always lately, I have suched mixed feelings (I want to just love a book again, and move on from the slump I'm in). There are elements that I really liked about this, the characters are pretty good, I like that they feel real and have baggage. I also liked the writer aspect, I'm usually a fan of stuff like that, as well as bookworm characters. And all of the romcom discussions were very fun for me because I adore watching them. However there was a lot that just didn't do it for me. The pacing of the romance felt really off, it seemed super insta-lovey. I know that they have "history" and all, but I just don't believe that they'd be so into each other so quickly. A crush? Infatuation? Yes. Almost sleeping together during a drive-in movie? Hard no. I know a lot of people like stuff like that, and that most adult romance novels have the main couple sleep together a lot and have a relationship fairly early on in the story, but it's just something that I almost never like, and it's a big reason why I typically don't read this genre and instead op for YA contemporary romance, I want everything to move slower so that we can really feel it. And let me just state up front that I don't hate sex in books, I just don't care for it if I don't have an attachment to the characters or if it doesn't feel earned, if that makes sense.
All of that being said, I still liked elements of the romance, especially those big moments at the end. I just love grand gestures. And I love that they both really liked each other in college, and as adults had a chance to meet again and actually fall in love.
Just because I didn't adore this doesn't mean I've given up on adult romance, I'm sure if I try hard enough I can find a style that works for me and makes me as happy as so many of the readers of this.
