4.75 stars!
This book is such a powerful tale of love and loss, freedom and the price that comes with it.
As a Caribbean woman it is so amazing to see a tale about our heritage and culture in mainstream media, to see the struggles of our ancestors personified is so powerful.

A beautifully written novel about the gray area between slavery and freedom, the emancipation of the slaves within the Caribbean and the backlash and uprisings that were involved.

Could’ve stood to be a bit longer. Might have helped some of the convenience feel some of it had.

A mother’s search for her children after the Emancipation Act of 1834. Rachel leaves the plantation in Barbados and begins her “freedom” journey so she can be at rest.

3.5 a testament to a mother’s love and intuition. It started strong but kind of plateaued for me and never surprised me again…it was predictable. However it was A story of loss and life. I cannot fathom what it would have been like to live as a slave and to be taken away from my family or watch as my own children were taken from me… Rachel’s trauma and loss read heavy in each chapter but so was her hope and will to move on. It was a good story…slow at times but meaningful.
