I wanted to like this more. Don't get me wrong--I love reading mythology, reinterpreted mythology, and just about anything related to classical mythology. And there were some great moments of showcasing Atlas' isolation. The Heracles character felt a little lazy, but overall, it was a good read. I'll read more of this series.

This is a beautifully written book that borrows the myth of Atlas to talk about our (arbitrary) emotional and mental weight to our past and future selves. The occasional insertion of the author's personal experiences was a brilliant touch that adds context and depth to her words.

A short but really pleasing novel, the language is playful and poetic and the take on the myth is original.

Jeanette Winterson is one of my favorite authors, so maybe it's not surprising that I enjoyed this book so much. It takes very little from her to make a book outstanding in my eyes, because I find that the core of all of her works is filled with so much tenderness, introspection, and vulnerability. This novel was no different. I found that it started off at a breakneck pace, glossing over many years in only a few pages. I think that the point of this novel wasn't to deliver the story of Atlas, but to intertwine her own story with the myth, and show how the shared threads of humanity connect them both.
This novel was thought-provoking and emotional, which are two things I didn't expect from a retelling of a seemingly simple myth. I need to read more of Winterson's books!
