"For nursery magic is very strange and wonderful, and only those playthings that are old and wise and experienced like the Skin Horse understand all about it"

On a Sunday morning a couple weeks ago I found this movie from 2023 on TV. I watched it without knowing anything and ended crying big fat tears.

"Real isn't how you are made" said the Skin Horse "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become real"
"Does it hurt?" Asked the rabbit
"Sometimes" said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are real, you don't mind being hurt"

I loved it so much that I had to immediately get the book. It was a very short but emotional read. I actually appreciate the movie telling us more about the boy, the rest was pretty true to the book and I know I'll be watching it many more times!

"Of what use was it to be loved and lose one's beauty ans become real if it all ended like this? And a tear, a real tear, trickled down his shabby velvet nose and fell to the ground"

*3 stars*
Imaginative, whimsical, classic, and always unintentionally makes me think of Chandler Bing.

"Of what use was it to be loved and lose one's beauty and become Real if it all ended like this?" And a tear, a real tear, trickled down his little shabby velvet nose and fell to the ground.

An absolute five-star classic. Sharing this story with my husband, who hadn’t grown up with it and had no memory of having heard it, made the experience even sweeter. It’s tender, timeless, and full of the kind of quiet wisdom that speaks to children and adults alike. The message about love making us real, about being seen, worn, and still cherished, is just as powerful now as it was when I first heard it. A beautifully written reminder of what it means to be truly loved.

I read this while listening to Frank Sinatra on vinyl, really setting a nice mood for a short reading. 'The Velveteen Rabbit' was really touching. Loved it.

Reading the back cover, I've discovered that the author Margery Williams had died in 1944 where she last moved to, in Greenwich Village, New York City. I found this so ironic as I've only heard of this children's book from the show 'Friends' which had taken place in Greenwich Village. (Season 4, Episode 6 - 'The One with the Dirty Girl').

a must read. really good but kind of sad.

This was on of my favorite books as a child. I must’ve still been learning to read at the time because the story’s much more involved than I remember. Nonetheless, it’s still a beautiful story of the power of love and making someone feel important and real.

The narrator of this edition did great, emotive voices for the characters, but they read so fast. I had to slow down the speed to 0.8x because it wasn’t giving the right effect. Personally, I think children’s books should be read slowly.

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams Bianco is such a warm and timeless story. It’s a sweet and heartfelt tale about love and what it truly means to be "real," making it a perfect choice for a bedtime read. My nephew was truly touched by it, and I still find it deeply moving even as an adult.
