The first 4 novellas were decent.

Sadly the final story Egorov didn’t appeal to me and was about 30% of the book.

I didn’t really like the stories. Some of them were pretty good but there were no conclusions. Just big questions left unanswered. Couldn’t get through the last story.

I mean I feel like I should congratulate myself because I finished this book….
This collection of novellas couldn’t seem to hold my attention. Each one I found dull….. and the twists weren’t really there
The first is about two kids that grew up in a house that is half haunted as per the eldest, she talks about it all the time terrifying her younger brother.

The second is about a man who explains that he lived life with the mind of a serial killer and tortured himself by not acting on those impulses.

The third is about a house washer, a machine that cleans the entire house while the owners are stuck in a plastic tube, and what happens when the couple is forced to be that close that long.

Fourth was about a gentleman that travels to Jupiter to get dropped down onto its surface to live a couple of months and enjoy the landscape.

Last there was the story of a Russian family whose son was killed….. on of their triplets that look so alike even their family can’t tell them apart.

Idk I found each story to have fallen short. I couldn’t get into it at all, which is sad because I have heard such great things about this author.

DNF. Only read the first two books based on reviews. Creepy but slow with anticlimactic endings.

I enjoyed josh malerman's previous story collection Goblin and was very excited for the release of this story collection. I was expecting a collection of horror short stories but this was a bit more slow burn creepy stories that are a slice of life. A few of the stories reminded me of Ray Bradbury which I enjoyed particularly The Jupiter Drop which felt scifi while still having a creepy extraterrestrial vs madness vibe.

The novellas presented here could be spectacular short stories, if they were tightened up by a good editor. But as they are, they're overlong to the point of extreme dullness.

I wanted to love this book, but I only liked it. Argyle and Doug and Judy Buy the House Washer were my favorite stories, but I didn't even love those. It's a decent book, but I didn't connect with anyone in any of the stories and nothing will stick with me. I think Malerman fans who love everything he writes will definitely love this one, but I'm hit or miss with Malerman.
