Have you ever started a book and immediately loved the main character? Like wow, they are so sweet, seem very caring, I see a lot of myself in this character, I would be this character's friend. But then, almost instantly, you cannot STAND them! This is what happened to me while reading The Next Best Fling.
Here's the situation: Marcela, our FMC, is a plus size Latina Librarian. She dated a guy named Ben in college, he ended things quickly with her, they decided to stay friends even though she still was secretly in love with him. 10 years later, she is still pinning for him, even though he is engaged to marry one of their mutual friends. She decides to fake date Ben's brother Theo, our MMC, since he is also in love with Ben's fiancé. This is meant to help both Marcela and Theo to get over their secret loves.
I truly loved Marcela for the first 5ish chapters of this book, then started to hate her. Ben is literally this whole girl's personality. Every little thing was about this damn guy, to the point it felt so excessive! Like damn girl, we got the hot brother here to help us out, but she is constantly questioning her loyalty to an engaged man that kept her in the friend zone for a decade. I felt like Marcela had no real personality, besides being obsessed with Ben and working in a library, I have no other clue about her. Even when Theo deicides to be up front with her about things and take their relationship seriously, she still questions if it's a ruse and if she can trust him because Ben said she shouldn't. Ugh, girl seriously??? How are you so stupid? What I also didn't get, is that since Ben friend zoned her, if she dates a guy that he doesn't like, he tells her to break up with them, so she does! Then later in the book, she says that men she dated had issues with her weight?? How did they have issues when Ben didn't even allow you to date a guy?? How tf does that make sense, it's not like guys had problems dating you, you would dump them from the jump once your toxic friend/lover said so. Ugh, I literally couldn't with this girl, even at the end of this book I basically stopped rooting for her. I think the author went waayyyy overboard with her writing of Marcela, she overdid it with the Ben obsessiveness and the "woe is me" game.
I, on the other hand, didn't care much for Theo but liked him a lot more towards the end of our book. He was so patient with Marcela and did grand jesters for her, even though she never reciprocated, till the last chapter.
Overall, if you are on the fence with this one, I say skip it. I wanted to dnf several times while reading but stuck it out because I like one of our side characters who is getting her own book very soon.

I think Marcela is me because she genuinely has all of the same insecurities as me, and that kinda scares me XD

This felt more like a YA romance (minus the spicy scenes); Marcela felt very childish in the beginning. I loved the second half of the book, I think Marcela was more self-aware of herself and her perceptions of others.
