Super cute, enjoyable read. Not sure if I'll read the next one or not, but this one was fun.
A solid debut by this author with some lovely moments and some hiccups.
This book kind of felt like my best friends wedding except the best friend is actually an asshole and she falls for his brother instead.
Marcela has been in love with her best friend Ben for years. Since they dated and he told her they were better off as just friends. When Ben gets engaged to Alice his brother Theo (ex NFL players, but it's not really relevant as he's retired now) shows up and admits to Marcela that he's also in love with Alice.
It's super soap opera-y and entertaining the writing is fast paced and easy to follow.
It's got some issues in that there is a lot of repetition and the FMC goes back and forth on her feelings A LOT. Too much. It also felt weird that the one character kind of holding everyone hostage just becomes a villain and there is no wrap up of that relationship by the end. It felt disjointed and weird.
Overall it's cute. But just ok.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for this review!

A fun addition to the collection of Fake-Dating and FWBs-to-Lovers books. I liked the character connections between the two leads. In addition to their shared experience of pining for someone who is taken they both contend with body-issues that are thoughtfully well-written by Gamez: Marcela’s insecurities about her weight is matched by Theo’s feelings that his own body has failed him/lost value as his injury forced him out of the NFL.
My one dissatisfaction with the book was the characters ages didn’t quite line up. All of them being roughly 26-28ish seemed right for being in the place in life to get engaged, retire from pro sports, or have their own apartment in San Antonio. But, everyone’s emotional maturity and coping strategies felt more like the response of someone fresh out of college.

The start was kind of slow but then quickly got better. The premise of the whole story is somewhat interesting but once the mcs are ready to move on to next level the FMC stops it and is very adamant that what they have won’t work because they liked other people and while she’s over the other dude for some reason the guy can’t be over the other girl. Like make it make sense. He’s clearly saying he’s ready to move on and that you are the person that made him realize that.
It’s that third act breakup that just like dude talk it out instead of running away.

I knocked off half a star for more than half the book Marcela’s internal monologue about keeping who she was trying to get over from Theo…babe you need to chill. Other than that I loved this! Theo was a communicator 🙌🏼 the grand gestures were perfect for their characters.

This book was MESSY. Ben when I catch you…it was cute in some ways but ultimately I did cringe towards the end. Also there wasn’t much build up and the narrator went on for way to long sometimes. 3.75/5⭐️
as a professional Yearner For A Friend lemme just say that i KNOOOOW miss gamez has gone through that as well! because the way she described it is insanely and incredibly accurate. spent a good 75% of the book crying! marcela y yo de un pájaro las dos alas
