This is not really a book you read for a deep plot you read it for the comfort and the characters. And I very much recomend it for a lighthearted read with its darker moments especially towards the end. I hope the next book is as good as the first

It is filled with great, lovable characters such as: disaster, sour cherry scone loving chosen one who can’t control his magic; best friend who is done with her friends crap, but still loves and supports him anyway; girl who likes ex-boyfriends (who is still in love with her) arch-nemesis; and finally disturbed (not my word, his), depressed, suicidal (at times), self-loathing, dramatic, gay vampire
who is in love with the boy who is supposed to be his arch-nemesis.

I jumped into this book knowing basically nothing. The title had come across my recommends a couple times and I quickly skimmed through the synopsis, but I was not prepared for how taken aback I was about to be by this book. The roving first person chapters worked so much better for me than they had in previous books, the characters were earnest and delightful, even when they were being a bit unreliable. The way the opening chapters set it up to both poke a little fun and criticism at a similar series in this genre had me grinning. This book just has so much heart and the fast paced turns of the plot made it insanely hard to put down.

I find the second half of this book to be really fun and engaging, but the first half of the book drags for me.

I do love this series, but I've only recently become fully aware of the extent of Rainbow Rowell's issues--namely, her racism in her earlier book Eleanor & Park, and her subsequent lack of apology or any form of acknowledgement of the harm she's caused. Eleanor & Park continues to be her most well-known and successful work, and it's being adapted into a movie, and Rowell still hasn't done *anything* to make up for its racism. Which is inexcusable, and leads me to think I shouldn't support her or her work moving forward.

I don't believe the art and the artist can be separated much in this case--not when she has refused to listen to those she's harmed, or acknowledged said harm at all. I don't think Rowell or her work should be supported, at least for now. I won't be buying any of her future books unless she fully reckons with the harm her racism has caused.
