This was a fun lighthearted read. I enjoyed the story and thought it was a fun concept. The book was a little too predictable for me which took away some enjoyment, but overall I really did enjoy it.
Enjoyed the campy Harry Potter fan fiction humor, but I really should have read fangirl first! This book was fun, I liked the pace and the characters.

I really appreciate what Rainbow Rowell does with the concept of this novel. She is the first author, to my knowledge, who not only mentions fanfiction in her work Fangirl, but made it an integral part of the plot. Fanfiction is a fascinating phenomenon that exists in our world and I'd like to see more author's take on it since they are the ones inspiring the work!
That being said, this novel moves a little slow for my tastes and I found myself putting it down and not picking it back up for a few weeks. If Fangirl wasn't one of my top five favorite books, I'm not sure I would have finished it. However, the ending really wraps the plot up nicely and I was impressed with the explanation.

A fun ride, Harry Potterish with swearing (in a fun way). I didn't love how the book felt like a sequel through much of the book even though it is the first in the series. There was a lot of "off page" history that I would have loved to be a part of more.

Alright, it was amazing. I hope there is a sequel. I'll be happy if there isn't, and I know Rowell doesn't like to tie everything up neatly in her books... at least not generally. There really isn't anything I didn't like.
Loved:
-Starts with same archetypes as Harry Potter. But then all the characters are so different and they're on, apart from Hogwarts. The world of Watford is very different.
-Dark but not anymore dark then Harry Potter.
-More adult than HP. Swearing.
-the progression of Baz/Simon. I squeeed.
-right in the feels with Eb
If there is a second books, please:
-Have Simon go on a quest for his magic. Maybe there was never any room for his own true magic inside him it ran away like the nursery.
-Find the nursery.
-Nik/Fiona scenes. Vamp hunter/vamp.
-Simon finds out who his mother and father were and meets his grandparents.
-Agatha finally sends the photo and Penny figures it out.
-More romantic scenes between Baz/Simon.
-Need more of the world of Mages.

Despite how much I loved this book and three of the characters (Simon, Baz, and Penelope), it is unfortunate to read a fourth of it without Baz. That, and I honestly don't care too much about Agathas point of view. Otherwise, all the characters are written well. Love the concept. Love the relationship between Simon and Baz. And most importantly, I just really, really enjoy Baz. One of my favorite book characters, for sure.
Words can't adequately describe my love for Simon, Baz, & Penelope (& my hate for Agatha) so I shall leave you with this.

This story was such a delightful romp, I read half of it in a single sitting! You don't need to have read Fangirl to read this, even though it is a kind of sequel. I love the premise of this book, being the fanfiction written by a character in another fiction book, and the story is super engaging and well paced. Plus the love story and the POC characters are perfection. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
