i hate how embarrassed i am about enjoying this but HOLY HELL did i enjoy this. not to beat a dead horse, but it truly is everything i love about Harry Potter while also addressing things HP (read: JKR) neglected. like, hello, let's talk about the trauma that comes with being a Chosen One!!!! give me all of the working through trauma in YA fiction!!! give me all the Chosen Ones going to therapy!!!! the worldbuilding was a little mediocre, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story at all. as the back cover said, i came for the makeouts and stayed for the magic. i've had my issues with Rainbow Rowell the past (she really doesn't know how to write asian characters, or any characters of color for that matter), but this feels like a marked improvement compared to her other work. i am so happy i gave this book a chance.
this is a little incoherent because i literally just finished the book and am feeling the post-story high, but wow i loved this so so so so SO much.
tl;dr: i would die for simon snow. my heart is so full

Let me start off by saying I really enjoyed Fangirl, But this book not so much. I realize I am a much bigger fan of contemporary than fantasy, but something in this book just fell a little short. Not sure what, I really liked all the characters especially Simon and Penny.. Maybe it was just calling the villain the humdrum, that made it all feel a little juvenile to me. Not sure, because I did like the use of nursery rhymes as spells. So, this was definitely my least favorite book by this author. But I can't wait until her next contemporary comes out :-)

THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING.

I didn’t know I needed this until I finally, after staring at it for days and reading the reviews, I purchased my own damn copy. Lol. I say this because I will look at a book and go “oh I want to read that.” But I never buy it. So I wanted to high-five myself when I finished it. It was SO GOOD.

First of all, I’ve never read any of her book, and I had discovered that Fangirl had a little something to do with this, but I couldn’t help it, I had to read this first. I do plan to read Fangirl, however.

Simon and Baz are literally my life. Their relationship makes me want to rip my hair out in the beginning, they’re enemies, and they’re always fighting. But then Baz says something (no spoilers), which makes me want to rip my hair out even MORE. As the series progresses, and as Simon and his friends unravel the plot, their relationship also:develops, and boy is it entertaining to read. Rainbow has an interesting writing style, one that I have never encountered, but thoroughly enjoyed.

I one hundred percent recommend this to anyone looking for something simply, interesting, and seem, thing unique because that’s that this book was. I BOW TO YOU RAINBOW.

Loved this book very much!!!

I've loved this series so far. At first I was put off by the similarities to Harry Potter, but as I kept reading I realized some of these similarities were on purpose to show a different way to approach the same cliches. The more I read the harder it was to put down. This will probably be on the reread just for the feels list for me.

Considering I didn't enjoy the Simon and baz parts in fan girl, I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed this! I feel like if I was to re-read fangirl, I'd have a different opinion on the Simon and baz parts now, due to learning more of their story.
There isn't too much action in the story, which I understand will annoy some, however I loved the focus on the characters and their relationships and found myself growing attached to them!
The reason I cant give the book 5 stars is purely, due to the similarities to other books, mainly Harry Potter, which rainbow acknowledges herself. Despite this, the book isn't a carbon copy of others and is able to stand on its own.

I loved how it tied together in the end but some parts I just got really bored. 3.5 stars
