I think I already read this Harry Potter fanfic like 15 years ago, but it had less bi erasure.

I was scared to reread this because I hadn't read it for over 2 years and I was scared that I wouldn't love it as much. I needn't have been scared. There's no way I could give this less than 5 stars. I know this has mixed reviews and I definitely understand why people don't like this, but none of the things that seem to bother others, bother me. I just love this book so much. Simon and Baz are the cutest and I would do anything for them. I cannot wait to read Wayward Son!

Excuse me?!?! How dare you make me fall in love with another world so hard? Gah! I don't think I ever said, "You're killing me!!" so much while reading a book and there was still more to read (usually, I say this once, when I book is left on a cliffhanger.) This was a delight to read and it just kept me hooked beginning to end. To every person who thinks that this is some Harry Potter fanfiction, you are dead wrong: this is much much better. (And that isn't just my pet peeve when people compare everything to Harry Potter talking.) I'm also very happy that I came into this series after it became a series, rather than when I was a stand-alone because I definitely want more (and off to go buy the second one I go!)

3.5 stars. Ok, so this book was pretty fun and was really easy to keep reading, but I did have some problems with it. The main one being that the reader is dumped at the climax of the story. Because it is obviously based on Harry Potter which is told over 7 books, that feeling of just showing up at the end is even stronger. There is a lot of history the characters reveal throughout the novel, but you kind of feel disconnected from it. I recommend you read Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell first, which is where this story originates as an meta series, and you get a ton of context via excerpts from the Simon Snow books (which exists in Fangirl as a 7 book series). I absolutely love the concept of an author creating a fictional book series within a novel, and then just writes that story for real, but Carry On just wasn’t quite as full as I was hoping. I think in order to really enjoy this book, you need to have read Fangirl, and be familiar with and enjoy fan-fiction. It honestly just made me want to read like 100,000+ word Wolfstar or maybe Drarry fics because those are the tropes Carry On is built on, just not nearly as in depth 🤷🏼‍♀️ all in all, pretty fun read. I’ll be reading the next two in the series, for sure!  READ BETWEEN THE SPINES APR 2023

I am conflicted but I know I will not be picking up the next book in the series.

Simon is rather annoying but Baz saved it for me. Good beans thems.

Simon Snow is The Chosen One and The Mage's Heir. He's convinced his roommate Baz is a vampire. This is their 8th year at Watford magical school. The Insidious Humdrum has been creating holes in the magic across the country and continues to attack Simon throughout his life.

***Spoilers***

The love story between Baz and Simon I would definitely give a a 4 or 4.5 star rating. But adding in all the over-the-top; mostly described as References To Past Events magic bits made this novel INCREDIBLY over-long and drawn out.

BUT if you skim the magic bits and the nonsense about the Insidious Humdrum (Which so easily telegraphs from the very beginning what it is all about) and focus only on the romance story you could have a very enjoyable (and vastly shorter) story on your hands.

Easy read, good story. I wish there were more details and descriptions though! I felt like there was hardly any scenery detail or descriptions of emotions or anything like that. Most of the description were from dialogue.
