I don't know why, but I wasn't all that excited by this. Maybe I'm just in the wrong mood, or maybe it feels too much like a postscript, but despite having such fondness for the Sandman universe, and reading through this quickly (how can I help it - graphic novels are like that), I wasn't sucked in. It's from the library and I'm not likely to go to the trouble of remembering to pick up the next volume, after the pandemic eases. Ah well.

No special complaints, or criticisms really. It was very Sandman, but in a rote, meaningless way, I guess, to my mind. Very pretty and fraught with Meaning but devoid of substance.

If ever there was book in need of the warning READ THE ORIGINAL SOURCE MATERIAL, this is the one. Years ago, I tried reading Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes but abandoned it after a dozen or so pages. I was new to the graphic novel world then, having previously only read Archie as issues and it had been years since I had read those. Now that I’m more comfortable with this format of reading, I should probably revisit Neil Gaiman’s popular Sandman series and try it again … maybe.

With all that in mind, I can only say “Meh” to this new imagination/expansion of the Books of Magic. I admit that I read about half of the first “chapter,” the Sandman Universe #1 and grew frustrated with a lack of being able to follow the leaps between settings. I jumped ahead myself and read the four issues of Books of Magic then went back and finished Sandman Universe #1. None of it impressed me enough to want to continue. The confusion I feel makes me hesitant in going back to read the original source material. I am curious about Tim and where his journey of magic will go next. But I don’t think I’m curious enough to read another volume. Who knows … maybe seeing the second volume, reading reviews of it, and looking at the synopsis will be enough to have me give it another try.

So magical, so beautiful. I'm not sure I'm reading the books in the right order... but comics can be silly that way. Neil Gaiman really does comics so well, this made me want to read the Sandman series

Pretty good start to a series. I would definitely recommend it to someone who wants wizardly Harry Potter type content, now that J K Rowling is in hot soup. Of note, however: Neil Gaiman isn't involved in this, it's just his setting.
