This was fine, but not nearly as good as the other Rokesby books. I think the narrator’s voice was too mature, and I should have stuck with solely reading the paperback. I think the whole plot was just a tad too convoluted for me. The spicy scenes were good, and I liked Cecelia, Edward was fine but I think the narration detracted from him rather than just enjoying the words on the page.
Interesting story. I was hoping for a juicier ending, maybe that she would be pregnant and the ship would leave before he realized, and by the time they reunited she’d be married to her cousin. Something tragic and moving. But I shouldn’t be surprised with the way this author writes her books that they ended up staying together and all was forgiven. Weird that they mentioned slaves and their comments on them were that the characters were indifferent to slavery but that they supposed they’d want to be free too??? Like? Why’d you even put that in here?
I'm not sure if it's the inconsistency of marketing this as a prequel on some sites or that it's the second one in the Rokesby's elsewhere, but I just wasn't sucked into it. It seemed like there wasn't a significant enough of a climax to bring Thomas and Cecilia together. They continually pushed things under the rug to avoid being honest with each other. I much preferred the banter and tension between Billie and George in the first one.

Not great, not terrible. A very middle-of-the-road novel as far as Julia Quinn goes. The plot dragged a bit in several spots, and there were more than a few plot points that seemed inserted for no purpose other than to act as filler. The book also just wouldn't have happened if the characters had more than a single brain cell to share between the two of them, but it's just like that sometimes.
