Prequels are fun and can totally be read out of order when they arrive on your holds list before the primary series

Cecilia tends to an unconscious Captain Rokesby, a compatriot of her missing brother Thomas, in New York in 1779, and, in an effort to remain in the vicinity, she tells the hospital and military that she and the Captain have been married.

It's a good tactic - she finds more information about her missing brother as the wife of a captain than as a random soldier's sister, and she is able to tenderly provide care to a beloved friend of her beloved brother. When the Captain wakes up, he remembers almost nothing of the previous 4-6 months, so she continues the ruse, lying to him with almost every breath and statement she makes.

After just one day of his being awake, it's clear to readers that she can trust him with the truth, but she continues to lie to him for weeks, an excruciating length of time for readers...many of whom, like me, grow increasingly frustrated with Cecilia until we nearly hope that not only will he dump her, but that she might also drown as she travels back to England. Nevertheless, her rescue by the besotted captain feels somehow satisfying.

The setting - all the characters were on the side of the British during the American Revolution - is interesting...and you can feel the author struggling to NOT outright say that the British colonizers were in the wrong and should go back to England immediately, but to imply is very gently and politely.

Anyway, it was distracting and diverting enough to lull me to sleep while I was distressed about modern-day colonizers, occupations, and injustice.

Cute and lighthearted, if you like Julia Quinn you'll like this :)

Cute, though there's a choice made that annoyed me.

3.5/5

Definitely liked this storyline a bit more than the last. These just don’t hit like the Bridgerton series did and I should’ve expected that!

I was entertained for sure. A comfort read when I needed it.
