Cecilia crosses the atlantic to find her war-wounded brother. But she can only find his best friend Edward Rokesby, who is lying unconscious in the hospital. Only when she pretends to be his wife, she’s allowed to see and care for him. As Edward wakes up he is surprised, but as he has some memory loss, he believes it must be true.
The characters are lovable and the story very easy to follow (yes it’s a lovestory so you don’t expect a profound narrative). It’s been a while since I indulged in a romantic historic novel, I got sucked into the book very quickly, now I’ll have to read the whole Bridgerton series and all the other prequels.

I always enjoy Julia Quinn. This one tested my patience a bit with the fact that Cecilia not just telling Edward they weren't married. But the letter writing between the two of them post meeting had me hooked. Not my favorite of Julia Quinns but I still loved it.
Julia Quinn does an another Amazing job at letting us into the lives of her characters. You can't help but feel sorry for the situation Cecelia finds herself in with the death of her father and the wounding of her brother (in the Army in New York). You can see her strength and independence when she leaves everything she has ever known to take a boat to NY to find out about her brother. Then there is the strength of character when she finds her brother's friend in the hospital, feverish and unconscious and she tells the lie that he is her husband so she can stay and nurse him.
On the other side Edward Rokesby is an honorable and kind soldier. He has shown up in the hospital after being gone for 3 months and has a large gap in his memory. Even in a weakened state, he believes that he is married and must take care of the one woman he has loved since her brother started sharing her letters to him.
Even as the two of them are caught up in this fake marriage, they both can't help but continue to fall in love. I laughed, I cried, I wanted to know more. Julia Quinn makes the reader really care about these characters and you want o them to get the Happily ever After that they deserve.

every julia quinn book has such an interesting premise but when you actually read it it’s like 80% boring dialogue and scenes, 10% interesting plot and confessions, 10% smut. and idk if i can go through it anymore

This book was fine. I don’t usually like plots built on lies but it was okay at first. However, the longer it went the more frustrated I got. If either of them would just tell the truth about how they were feeling or what they were thinking it would’ve all worked out much quicker. I know that’s not the point but I can’t help being frustrated with it.
