Super weird. Super cool. Very violent. And poetic. And deep. And smooth. And weird. Seriously weird.

I'm of two minds about this adaptation. It's been awhile since I've read this series and the TV series is a little more fresh in my mind. I'm not entirely certain that audio is the best format for this story. It's such a visually imaginative work that I feel like a lot is lost in just describing some of the visuals rather than being able to see them either in artwork or cinematically. And, of course, it's a bit rough to hear Gaiman's voice narrate this given all the gross stories that have arisen about him.
So this is set in the DC universe before it got all kid friendly in the 80's I believe. It's dark humor and dark themes and I love it. The actors are great, the sound mixing is great and it's just a trip that it very enjoyable.
I've read these stories a few times over the years and despite being a huge fan of audiobooks, was sceptical of this audible version. But, it's glorious.
I listened along while reading the Absolute edition volume 1 and it fully enhanced the experience (it's also interesting checking which parts Gaiman has updated or altered, sometimes a word, sometimes a phrasing, sometimes the order but all subtle, sensible and for the good).
Even if you don't have the pictures and just listen, it works incredibly well. The cast is great in places, good overall. I found myself welling up at some of the emotional scenes and stories, tense and scared at the horrific parts (you know the ones). It has real power and emotion.
Read in fits and starts, I'd gradually slowed down my reading/listening, to savour it, but now that part 2 has been released, I can keep going.
If you are a Sandman fan but sceptical of this as a format, give it a whirl. It's well worth it and allows you to experience the excellent stories in a new way.

Perfect story, perfect voice cast, ended on the perfect issue. Excited for #2
I loved the graphic novels, and this was a totally different (but still fantastic) way to enjoy the story.
This is a fun version of the story. It’s great to hear dramatized, but some of the power and mystery gets lost in translation. Some of the music feels overly bombastic at times. And strangely, Gaiman—whose narration of his own books I love—feels out of place here.
