The Sandman

Neil Gaiman, Dirk Maggs

4.4 AVERAGE

The performance of this is amazing. So many character and voices and sound effects. But, I felt the story was disjointed. It’s was more like separate stories with Dream in almost every one of them, but the stories didn’t build off each other. Incredible performance, but a meh plot.

The Sandman comics were an instrumental part of my adolescence; and it’s been a while since I’ve cracked open any of those wonderful hardbound collections. So it’s a joy to revisit these stories in a sort of Cliffs notes dramatization. Uneven and often glossing over quite a bit, it also perfectly brings to life some of the series’ finer moments. And one cannot fault the amazing production, the Elfman/Batman-esque score, the myriad of big name talent and awe-inspiring sound design. And there’s just the right touch of disturbing body horror and goth teenager sadness porn. Not a replacement for the touchstone series, but a fine refresher and probably quite spooky and touching for the uninitiated.

This is an amazing adaptation, and the music and SFX play such an amazing role (I know, duh! But they did a great job!)
If you read the comics you should definitely give it a go!

The incorporation of DC characters seemed rather silly. I also forgot how dark (pleasantly so) sandman is.

What fun that I finished listening to this on Leap Day! I have the complete collection of the original comic books with the exception of the first handful, which are in a compilation because we didn't start collecting it until the first 3 or so were out. While I am a huge fan of Neil Gaiman and his audiobooks, especially when he narrates them, I was a bit skeptical about this production because the visual aspect of the comic books were part of the reason why I fell in love with the story. But the writing is equally strong, and it was these comic books that got me to like comic books in the first place.

For those of you who are skeptical the way I was, I can tell you that I am blown away by this production and I know that I will be listening to these stories more than once, although I might skip around to some of my favorites.

Neil Gaiman is the narrator (yay) but the voicing for Dream fits in perfectly with how I had always heard him in my head. I love his older sister Death as well. Many of the other voices are fabulous as well, and the sound effects and music are just right. The Collectors was definitely the creepiest of this collection, with the Corinthian making me shiver. I am so glad I wasn't listening to it when I was about to go to bed! Listening to his collection is making me want to dig out my collection and reread it from start to finish, although that's going to have to wait until summer at least, when I will have time.

With many audiobooks, I often listening to speeds ranging from 1.5x to 2x (depending on the book), but this is one book that I am savoring at the speed that is intended. For one thing, the music and sound effects would sound off at a faster speed. But also, the actors do an amazing job and that combination with the excellent story makes me want to take my time with it. It is well worth it!

Amazing voice cast and wonderful narration by Neil Gaiman! I LOVED THIS!

This was an absolute pleasure to listen to. (I left a review for the comic; TLDR the art was a put-off for me)

The sound effects and such add great ambiance, and none of it was over-the-top or distracting to the narration and voice acting. There’s some great voices in this graphic novel, Neil Gaiman and Andy Serkis being my highlights.

There was an extra pleasure to hearing Gaiman’s dry tone in the narration. I’m excited to continue on to Act II etc.!

Fantastic, highly recommend the audio book!
