I love the graphic novels, the verbal telling of the stories is wonderfully satisfying. I would absolutely read the graphic novel first. This audio production gives it a new life.
Oh my god. Oh my god. Let’s talk about this:
First of all: 4.75 stars. So close to 5 stars, but I didn’t really like the change in narration for random chapters/episodes. I think I would’ve preferred a consistent, omnipotent narrator as opposed to switching the narration to the relevant characters’ voices. Some of them were not very interesting.
HOWEVER: wow wow wow this was amazing. I loved the writing style, I loved the dramatization, I loved the borrowed characters from other universes. The whole thing was just amazing. Definitely a new favourite.
I think “The Sound of Her Wings” and “Facade” were my favourite chapters, even though I just said I didn’t like the characters becoming the narrators. BUT I DON’T EVEN CARE THAT CHAPTER WAS SO GOOD.
The main sibling characters (Dream, Death, etc) were incredibly well fleshed out, and even when the content of the story changed from chapter to chapter, they all still felt very connected by Morpheus intertwining himself in each new character’s stories throughout history (either literally showing up, or being spoken of through storytelling like in the chapter “Tales in the Sand”).
Holy crap. Listen to this audiobook. Right now.

I'll give it the leg up. I love The Sandman comics, and this is an incredibly faithful reinterpretation of the first twenty comics. It is broken into audio drama "epsiodes," which might throw off people expecting an audiobook, but I enjoy full cast audio dramas, and I think it's easy to adjust to the style. I will say there are some very uncomfortable episodes. If you're faint of heart, skip episode 6 "Twenty-Four Hours" because that one was a tough listen and only really matters in minor ways. Anyway, it's overall great with a strong cast. I can't wait for the next one.

While I have enjoyed many of Neil Gaiman stories, I found some of the episodes in Sandman, especially the rape scene, distressing.

Aaaaahhhhhhh. Definitely recommend the audible version of this! So freaking good
I wouldn't say I "read" it. It's an audio story like the old time radio shows. The best way to spend my time walking the dog. Thrilled there's an Act 2 and a Netflix show.
Listened to this around Halloween. Very much enjoyed the stories and the production.
The audio version of the Sandman graphic novel, as preformed by the amazing James McAvoy and others. It was delightful to hear a beloved classic preformed by different actors with their different emotional choices.
