The one thing that this book keeps consistent throughout the story it's aesthetic. Through Murakami's writing style and the translator's work, we're transported in the somber and full-of-death world of Toru Watanabe, with every scene, place, thought, and dialogue seeming extremely vivid. This clearness of the story seems very entertaining while reading, but if you take it away you'll realize that Murakami writes about a bunch of nonsense. The flaws of this book are numerous, and even if it seems you're following a story while reading, you're not. There are just events. Rememberings of a 40-year-old man. Are his thoughts even real? He does mention in the first chapter that he doesn't remember much, and then proceeds to write a full book, very vividly and detailed, about his life 20 years ago. Maybe that also explains why the ending is so fucking bad. Maybe.

I always wondered how the main character got so many bitches like he's so basic. MAYBE it's cus he's nice I guess, but he got his ded bsf chick, he got a hot adventurous chick and he got an older woman. I feel like there's a pattern in Murakami's books, or the ones I've read so far...

I liked this one better than kafka cus this one is just a light read about life...and women. Though one particular mentally ill girl made me wanna slap her and tell her to get a freaking grip.

beautifully written. murakami is a wonderful storyteller who makes great use of language, and the translation was simply gorgeous. however, not much happens plot-wise as we are mainly just following toru watanabe as he fucks his way through tokyo and falls a little more in love with his dead bestfriend's ex-girlfriend and this taken girl who says the most out of pocket shit ever. this book is also horny as fuck. 4/5 stars
