Murakami’s writing style is beautiful and easy to read. The content of this novel, however, is not for anyone who is depressed or just can’t stand reading deeply disturbing thoughts from deeply disturbed characters. There isn’t much growth in these characters and it’s just hard to read sometimes, and it makes you wonder why you’re reading it.

This is a weird book. I love Murakami’s writing style and i (mostly) enjoyed reading this book but there are problematic elements (I especially really really hated the story of when Reiko was a music teacher). The thing is, I don’t know if Murakami is a genius and has carefully constructed his characters or if these are his own misogynistic etc views coming through. Definitely give it a read but remember to check the content warnings (there are a lot). <3

I was positively suprise with that book. Such an amazing book to reflect on process of growing up, changes, grief, and more. Great show how Japan look like. How mental illness is hired and how finding yourself is hard. Specialty after so much tragic happening around you. Great book to read.

Haruki Murakami really irritates me as an author because he clearly has the ability to write beautiful, intense passages but seems to simultaneously possess a desire to make every single female reader feel as uncomfortable as possible. There were events in this book that made me visibly cringe and overall is incredibly problematic. Unfortunately, I think my time attempting to connect with Murakami is now over.

Lyrical, haunting. A reflection on grief and life and love.

“After 18 would come 19, and after 19, 18 of course. But she turned 20. And in the autumn, I would do the same. Only the dead stay 17 forever.”
