Like most series, the second book was not quite as good as the first. It was darker in tone (kidnapping a child, with the possibility of being murdered) and had less mystery to it. I think the main character would be better portrayed as 14 or 15. He's too adult for 12 years old. I enjoyed it enough, though, that I will read the third book.
