I loved it! The vulgarity, the character building the world building. I loved it all. I laughed, cried, and had some WTF Gabriel? moments. I hated him, rooted for him, and by the end, I absolutely loved him. This book isn't for everyone. It is very vulgar and has some sexual scenes, both hetero and homo so if that bothers you, don't read it. I look forward to reading the next 2 installments when they release. Great book.

This is "The Witcher" meets "The Name of the Wind" meets "The Last of us."

I swear anything that jay kristoff writes is pure gold. His books always take me so long to get through because they deserve rapt attention rather than a skim and this book is no exception. While it was a bit predictable at times and a few of the "big reveals" could be seen from a mile off, the characters and their relationships are so beautifully complex and the world so well developed that the story just sings. Love love love.

I loved this grim dark fantasy book!

J.Kristoff masterfully balances attention to characters, world and plot. At the same time, it’s perfectly paced and I was engaged throughout the book. Some plot revelations were predictable for me, but one of them was a jaw dropping nice plot twist that I enjoyed a lot. There are two timelines, but it’s effortless to follow. Actually, I expected the reading to be a small challenge, but it’s very laid-back and easy read.

I like the way J.Kristoff tackled grim dark fantasy, the characters are not sugarcoated, they seem realistic, with both positive and negative character traits. The grim dark is not overdone, the romance subplot was done perfectly. The world and lore with vampires, religion and history is nice. I enjoyed reading the book and appreciated beautiful illustrations. I will read the second book after a while.
