Since characters reset every chapter (next generation), I had trouble getting invested in the story. Felt like a chronological collection of acceptable but not excellent short stories

Beautiful. Impeccable. Genius. Such a creative premise/structure. I am in awe of Gyasi’s ability to pack so much into 300 pages without it feeling rushed.

this was one of, if not THE MOST brilliant novel i’ve ever read EVER. i was captivated, awestruck, emotional, educated. this is a family saga - there are few writers that are able to write for such a range of characters and so clearly capture the heart and soul of every single one of them DISTINCTLY in under 30 pages each. she made us feel and understand these people, their hopes, their loves, their sacrifices, their pain. AND WHEN IT CAME FULL CIRCLE IN THE END. no notes. simply incredible.

This is one of the best books I have ever listened to. My heart feels warm and gushy. My gut and all my limbs feel entirely at ease. This book is both sincere and harshly truthful. A must read for everyone, especially those who are on the journey of finding their identity through tracing back their roots.

Lessons learned:
-history is story telling. It is my duty and my privilege to listen to all of the stories told to me.
-heritage extends back many many maaannnyy generations and there’s no way to isolate one moment from the next
-time to learn more about the history of the transatlantic slave trade
-I could meet my own extended family at any moment, a reminder to show grace to everyone I meet.
-we are all accumulations of our ancestors’ time

AaaahhhHHH. What an amazing book!
