I was so looking forward to this book. Enemies to lovers and a self-confident, aggressively flirty woman are my favorite romance tropes.

This wasn’t it.

Jake never proved to me that he could improve his selfishness. And his commentary was consistently crass. I don’t think he deserves Brenna. I definitely don’t see them continuing after this book unless Jake cleans up his act and goes to therapy. And Brenna could use a good support network; Summer really let me down.

Also, Rupi is a one-dimensional character Kennedy clearly included to be “diverse.” Portraying Rupi as chickpea-obsessed and a shrieking, manic woman with “luminous” skin isn’t flattering - it’s fetishizing. What a missed opportunity. Bummer.

The second book in the Briar U series. Brenna Jensen is a junior at Briar University studying Communications. At the start of of the book she’s hoping to secure a internship at HockeyNet, a sports channel. Before her first interview she runs into Jake Connelly a hockey star athlete from Harvard at a diner after she gets stood up on a date. They banter back and forth. The first interview for the internship goes poorly and Brenna lies and tells Ed Mulder that Jake Connelly is her boyfriend. She then asks Jake to to fake date her so that she has a better chance of getting the job, since Ed is a big fan of Jake’s. In return for his help Jake wants a real date for every fake one. Brenna agrees. They go on a series of dates getting to know each other, while keeping their friends in the dark. They grow closer sharing different aspects of themselves with Brenna telling Jake about her ex boyfriend Eric who has a substance abuse issue. They begin to fall in love, and try to figure out how to do a long distance relationship. With Jake being a senior getting ready to graduate and head to the pros, and Brenna currently a junior with a year left at Briar. This was a fabulous rivals to lovers story where the two leads have amazing chemistry.  Brenna and Jake’s ‘I love you’s’ to each other were swoon worthy. Definitely my favorite book in the series so far.

Brenna‘s and Jake‘s chemistry was so so good. Jake is a sweetheart and Brenna is the bomb™️. There were some flaws (for me personally the whole falling in love with each other thing went way too fast in terms of them only knowing each other for a few weeks) and it was a teeny bit predictable, but other than that I really enjoyed the story and the themes dealt with in the book.

Super cute enemies to lovers and fake dating tropes. Bad ass girl who is constantly turning down the captain of the rival hockey team has to ask him to be her fake boyfriend to help her get a job. He asked for a real date in return. So cute. There are very safe past trauma stories for this main character.
